HAPPY SUMMER from Rochester, NY!
Rochester is one of my favorite cities (OK I've got lots of favorite cities at this point..), and it feels so good to be back in one of the especially best places to be in June.
I went to college here, and have been coming back to visit occasionally in the past 6 years but finally get to spend a solid month among the lilacs, dreamy houses, badass murals and god-dang lovely summer breezes. Not to mention the Public Market, Jazz Festival, and one of my all time favorite lil' businesses, Eat Me Ice Cream.
Anyway. I am also here to make art as a resident at The Yards Collective, located at the Public Market. I have been spitting out a bunch of map-based portraits and it feels amazing to be painting again after a hiatus.
Speaking of paint, I made my own! For the first time, I am mixing my own paints from natural pigments. This feels awesome because I have been taking steps to align my practice with my principles, and letting go of acrylics is a satisfying act towards eschewing plastic use. I'm not perfect, but I like doing what I can.
The cool thing about having the raw materials is having options for different mediums. I have started with watercolors but could play around with oil if I want, or even making pastels.
That's what I've been up to in the last week and a half.. As always, I update my Instagram frequently so if you want to see more of what I'm making check out instagram.com/usandweart.
